OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS
EPA & DHA which are present in fish body oils have the potential for improving the health of cardio-vascular system. Medical reports show that as the amount of EPA in the diet increases, the risk of coronary heart disease decreases. In a nutshell, EPA from fish oils lowers serum cholesterol & triglyceride levels, make your blood less viscous, thinner & less sticky, less prone to clump together. Diets of Eskimo and coastal Japanese are rich in the Omega 3 fatty acids, EPA & DHA. Their death rate from heart attacks is much lower when compared to the Western man. DHA is a major component of the brain and retina, and has a possible role in nerve transmission. Research has shown that many migraine suffers have experienced some relief from consuming Fatty Acids.
WHAT IS IT?
Heralded for its heart-healthy actions, fish oils offer high concentrations of polyunsaturated fats called omega-3-fatty acids. While all fish contain these fats, cold-water fish—salmon, sea bass, tuna, trout, mackerel—are particularly rich sources because of their diet: plankton packed with omega-3s. Interestingly the colder the water, the more omega-3s in the plankton. Cold –water fish also boast the most potent forms of omega-3s: the essential fatty acids known as dicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexzanoic acid (DHA). Consumed as part of a fish-filled diet or in supplement form, omega-3s have myriad healing powers.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Scientists are constantly discovering new health benefits for fish oils and their essential fatty acids )EFAs, including omega-3s). In addition to their more notable properties as heart-healing substances, there’s evidence that these fatty acids ease menstrual cramps and the pain and heavy bleeding of endometriosis. Omega-3s may even aid mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Preliminary findings in people with manic depression (bipolar disorder) link fish oil supplementation to fewer mood swings. Some experts even contend that the rising tide of depression in the United States can be traced to the increasingly fish-poor diet people tend to follow.
· Nutritional supplement is said to help kids with dyslexia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and ‘clumsy-child syndrome’. A simpler answer is to serve lots of tunafish.
AMININO ACIDS
AMINO ACIDS are the “Building Blocks” of the body. Besides building cells and repairing tissue, they form antibodies to combat invading bacteria & viruses; they are part of the enzyme & hormonal system; they build nucleoproteins (RNA & DNA); they carry oxygen throughout the body and participate in muscle activity. When protein is broken down by digestion the result is 22 known amino acids. Eight are essential (cannot be manufactured by the body) the rest are non-essential (can be manufactured by the body with proper nutrition).
L-CARNITINE
A “free amino acid” which has been found to improve fat metabolism in the heart and other organs and tissues, reduces Triglyceride and cholesterol levels, improves heart muscle tolerance, prevents irregular heartbeat and angina, provides more energy for the heart and helps lower blood pressure.
TAURINE (Non-Essential Amino Acid)
Helps stabilize the excitability of membranes, which is very important in the control of epileptic seizures. Taurine and sulfur are considered to be factors necessary for the control of many biochemical changes that take place in the aging process; aids in the clearing of free radical wastes.
GAMMA AMINOBUTYRIC ACID (GABA)
GABA is a non-essential amino acid which functions as an inhibitory calming neurotransmitter in your brain. It is found in high concentrations only in your brain & eyes. It can be derived from protein foods or manufactured in your body from glutamic acid.
GABA is usually deficient in both clinical & experimentally induced seizures. Low levels of GABA promote excitatory neurotransmitters. Low GABA levels have been found in the brains of patients with multiple sclerosis, action tremors, tardive dyskinesia, & other disorders of movement. Low GABA levels have been found in panic, anxiety, depression, alcoholism, & bipolar disorders.
Potential uses of GABA:
· May reduce symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
· May reduce symptoms of anxiety.
· May help some schizophrenics.
· May help to reduce high blood pressure.
· May increase the effect of insulin so is useful for diabetics but not for hypoglycemia.
· May suppress appetite.
· May help with premenstrual symptoms.
· Helpful for some cases of depression.
GLYCINE (Non-Essential Amino Acid)
Helps trigger the release of oxygen to the energy requiring cell-making process; Important in the manufacturing of hormones responsible for a strong immune system.
PHENYLALAINE (Essential Amino Acid)
Used by the brain to produce Norepinephrine, a chemical that transmits signals between nerve cells and the brain; keeps you awake & alert; reduces hunger pains, functions as an antidepressant and helps improve memory.
RNA & DNA
Is the reproductive substance found in the body, which rejuvenates cellular activity. It is often referred to as the “essence of life” or the “substance” which retards the aging process.
COENZYME Q10
WHAT IS IT?
One of the world’s most popular supplements, the chemical coenzyme Q10 has generated great excitement as a heart disease remedy and a cure for countless other conditions. The body naturally produces this compound, which has been dubbed “vitamin Q” because of its essential role in keeping all systems running smoothly. In fact, the scientists who identified coenzyme Q10 in 1957 initially honored its ubiquitous presence—it’s found in every human cell and in all living organisms—by naming it “ubiquinone”. Small amounts are also present in most foods.
A member of a family of compounds called quinines, coenzyme Q10 (sometimes called Co Q10) works in concert with enzymes (hence the name “coenzyme”) to break down and convert food into energy. It is particularly abundant in high-energy-demanding cells, such as those found in the heart. In addition, coenzyme Q10 acts as a powerful antioxidant to prevent the cellular damage caused by unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals.
HERBALISM
A BRIEF DEFINITION AND HISTORY
Not many people realize what herbalism is, how far back in history it goes, where it originated from, or where our modern day medical practices originated from.
First, what is an herb? Most of the modern day definitions state an herb is any part of the plant that is useful for healing, food, dye or colorants. The older definition, which is also the horticultural definition, is the non-woody part of a plant such as leaves, fruit and soft (green) stems.
Herbalism is the practice and study of the uses of plants.

HARITAKI (TERMINALIA CHEBULA)
Haritaki is a gentle laxative.
Haritaki is the best single herb for generally controlling Vata, and is considered by some to be the single most important Ayurvedic herb. Widely used in Tibetan medicine, it is called the “king of herbs” there. Since Vata promotes constipation, the gently laxative qualities of haritaki are perfect for balancing the dosha.
It nourishes the brain and nerves. It is strongly astringent, contracting tissues, and is therefore used for various ulcers, prolapses, and fluid discharges. In Ayurveda, haritaki is called “the mother”, and is thought to increase mental/spiritual awareness. It is given to children upon the premature loss of a parent.
NUTMEG NUT (MYRISTICA FRAGRANS)
Nutmeg quiets the mind, and helps insomnia.
Nutmeg is first and foremost a pungent digestive aid. Ayurveda says that this herb promotes absorption. It treats excess gas, and slows diarrhea.
It quiets the mind, and helps insomnia. Traditionally, nutmeg has been used for urinary incontinence and premature ejaculation.
BIBITAKI (TERMINALIA BELERICA)
Bibitaki is a powerful rejuvenative herb that nourishes the lungs, throat, voice, eyes and hair.
Another of the famous myrabolan fruits of Ayurveda, bibitaki is the best single herb for generally controlling Kapha. It is a powerful rejuvenative herb that nourishes the lungs, throat, voice, eyes and hair. It excels at removing stones and accumulations of toxins (mucus, cholesterol, mineral deposits) in the digestive, urinary, and respiratory tracts. It is unique in being both laxative and astringent, so it purges the bowels, while simultaneously toning the tissues of the digestive tract.
Since Ayurveda considers bibitaki ti be anti-kapha, we would expect that it would reduce fats in the body. Science now shows that, in fact, at least in experimental animals, the herb reduces
Atherosclerosis, fat in the heart and fat in the liver.
Bibitaki has been shown in recent studies to protect the liver from damage.
CARDAMOM (ELETTARIA CARDAMOMUM)
Cardamom is an excellent digestive enhancer, especially for cold and sweet food.
Since it is widely consumed as a food, it is regarded as being quite safe. It is used in herbal medicine to treat gastralgia, enuresis (involuntary urination), spermatorrhea, phlegm, indigestion and gas.
This herb has a warming, anti-mucus action, so is particularly appropriate to be used as a component in lung formulas.
It is considered to be particularly rejuvenative for the spleen. According to Ayurveda, it removes kapha from the stomach and lungs, as well as being good for reducing high vata generally.
Recent studies have shown that cardamom has pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic effects.
SIDA CORDIFOLIA
Sida Cordifolia has been used for over 2,000 years to treat bronchial asthma cold & flu, chills, lack of perspiration, headache, nasal congestion, aching joints and bones, cough & wheezing, and edema. In Western terms, Sida Cordifolia is considered to have diaphoretic, diuretic, central nervous system stimulating and anti-asthmatic activity.

AYURVEDA
Ayurveda originates from ancient India and is from the words Ayus meaning “life” and Veda meaning “knowledge”. It dates back about 5000 years and has a very detailed history.
Ayurveda is practiced today and uses herbs, breathing, meditation and diet together for the over all wellness. It is based on rebalancing and maintaining the 5 elements of the body being earth, water, air, fire and ether. These 5 elements are balanced in relation to 7 different body types and 3 other variables called doshas.

This famous Ayurvedic herb (the name means sour in Sanskrit) is one of the most useful medicines in the Indian pharmacopoeia, and is considered to be one of the strongest rejuvenatives (rasayana), particularly for the blood, bones, liver and heart. It is an exceptionally rich source of vitamin C, containing thirty times the amount found in oranges.
